Meet the Filmmaker

Gabrielle Shepard graduated as an MFA Film and Television Producing Fellow in the Conservatory of Motion Pictures at Chapman University. She has produced films that have been programmed in the Austin Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival and Cannes Short Film Corner. Gabrielle now pursues fresh and dynamic projects to bring to life as a writer, director and producer.  She currently works in the Motion Picture Lit department at William Morris Endeavor.

Meet the Mentor

As a veteran character actress and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, Octavia Spencer has become a familiar fixture on both television and the silver screen. Her critically acclaimed performance as Minny in the DreamWorks film The Help won her an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics’ Choice Award, among numerous other accolades. Spencer recently starred as mathematician Dorothy Vaughan in the Academy Award–nominated drama Hidden Figures. Her performance earned her a second nomination for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Spencer can next be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated fantasy drama The Shape of Water.

Meet the Filmmaker

Matthew Castellanos is a Mexican-American filmmaker from South Central, Los Angeles. He intends for his stories to start new discussions and shed some light on humanity. For the past two years, he's produced and directed twelve digital television shows on artist Tyler, the creator's network GOLF MEDIA. This August, Matthew's first linear television show NUTS + BOLTS premieres on the network VICELAND, which he's serving as both executive producer and director.  

Meet the Mentor

Nina Yang Bongiovi is a leader in independent cinema, possessing in-depth knowledge of film finance, creative and physical producing, and a knack for discovering talent. She is a champion of diverse voices with her producing partner, Forest Whitaker, under their banner Significant Productions.

Their endeavor to work with auteur directors and filmmakers of color is priority. Creating opportunities and inclusivity for underserved and underrepresented storytellers is their motto. Their first feature, "Fruitvale Station" by Ryan Coogler set the tone for all of their statement films to come after winning the Grand Jury and Audience Award at Sundance 2013.

After "Fruitvale Station," the producing duo launched "Dope" by Rick Famuyiwa and "Songs My Brothers Taught Me" by Chloe Zhao, both in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2015. Notably, all three films had their international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival thus garnering awards worldwide.

Nina and Forest also produced "Roxanne Roxanne" by Michael Larnell, which received critical acclaim at Sundance 2017 and is set to release worldwide in March 2018. Currently, Nina is in active development of the Angela Davis feature biopic with Lionsgate-CodeBlack and her most recent film, "Sorry to Bother You" by Boots Riley, is heading to Sundance in January 2018.

Nina is an alumna of University of Southern California where she received her graduate degree from the Walter Annenberg School. She sits on the Board of Film Independent, The Oscar Grant Foundation and the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), and is a member of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Nina is fluent in Mandarin, Chinese and resides in Los Angeles with her husband and their young daughter.

Meet the Filmmaker

Sara Shaw is a director and editor. While attending NYU's graduate film program at the Tisch School of the Arts, her film Ballarat Ghost Town won the Grand Prize and Audience Award at the Fusion Film Festival. She has edited a number of feature films, including Desiree Akhavan's Appropriate Behavior (Sundance '14), Adam Leon's Tramps (Toronto '16), Theresa Rebeck's Trouble (SIFF '17), and Desiree Akhavan's forthcoming The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Desiree Akhavan is the writer, director & star of APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Best First Screenplay at the Indie Spirit Awards. Her second film, THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST will premiere in competition at Sundance 2018. She’s currently in production on a comedy series for Hulu & Channel 4 that was developed at the The Sundance Institute’s Episodic Story Lab. She has a BA from Smith College and an MFA from NYU’s Grad Film Program.

Meet the Filmmaker

Nefertite Nguvu is a graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, where she obtained a B.F.A in Film. Her thesis project at SVA won the award for outstanding screenplay. Nefertite is an award-winning writer/director and producer whose work includes, several narrative and documentary shorts, a host of web based programming, and a feature film entitled “In The Morning” which is currently available worldwide via Video on Demand.

Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy and Grammy-winning actor and musician, Common continues to break down barriers with a multitude of critically acclaimed, diverse roles, and continued success at the box office.  He appeared on the big screen in the Oscar nominated film, SELMA, a film centered around the civil rights marches that changed America. Alongside John Legend, he won the Academy Award and Golden Globe in 2015 for “Best Original Song in a Motion Picture” for “Glory” which was featured in the film. In 2016, he appeared in the David Ayer’s high profile comic book movie, Warner Bros’ SUICIDE SQUAD. The film broke box office records both domestically and around the world. Earlier this year, Common starred opposite Keanu Reeves in the highly anticipated sequel JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, and appeared in Judy Greer’s directorial debut A HAPPENING OF MONUMENTAL PROPORTIONS with Allison Janney. This Summer, he appeared in Bleecker Street’s MEGAN LEAVEY alongside Kate Mara, Tom Felton, Bradley Whitford and Edie Falco.

Meet the Filmmaker

Neil M. Paik is a filmmaker and artist from Los Angeles. After graduating from the film school at UCLA, where he was editor of the Daily Bruin, he filmed a documentary on the ground in the Middle East analyzing diverse perspectives in the conflict zone. His short fiction films have garnered several awards while playing at festivals nationwide. Over the last three years, he has worked in development and production at Warner Bros., Color Force, and WME and as a director’s assistant.

Rick Famuyiwa recently directed the pilot for SHOWTIME’s THE CHICAGO PROJECT. He is an alumnus of the USC School of Cinematic Arts and the Sundance Institute’s Writer/Director Labs. His movie DOPE was produced by Forest Whitaker’s Significant Productions. Pharrell Williams executive produced the movie. DOPE premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Special Jury Prize for Editing, and screened at the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors Fortnight.
