Lei Day

In Hawai‘i, May Day (May 1) is Lei Day – a day to share lei and the spirit of aloha. Giving a lei is no small thing. It’s an opportunity to show honor, high regard and love; and here in the Islands, we like to give lei for many occasions. Join us in celebrating Lei Day by entering below for a chance to win 140,000 HawaiianMiles (enough for a roundtrip flight for two to Hawai‘i!). Then, read on to learn about the different types of lei and why we give them!

Plumeria

In Hawaiian culture, the plumeria symbolizes positivity and is a favorite lei used to welcome guests, with its sweet fragrance and variety of vibrant colors—from white and yellow to pink and red. You’ll also notice that this flower adorns the hair of many of our female flight attendants.

Pīkake

A favorite flower of Hawai‘i’s beloved Princess Ka‘iulani, who named the flower after the beautiful peacocks who roamed her Waikīkī gardens. Pīkake is a sweet smelling, delicate flower, favored for special occasions for women, including weddings.

‘Ilima

These flowers are known as “good luck flowers,” and are often given to people as wishes for good luck. Indigenous to Hawai‘i, thousands of ‘ilima flowers are strung to make this lei that was traditionally worn by Hawaiian royalty as it was reserved for ali‘i (chiefs). It is also the official emblem of the island of O‘ahu.

Maile

Most often reserved for memorable occasions such as weddings, graduations and proms, maile lei symbolize life and growth, and also communicate respect and honor to the recipient. You’ll notice in our new livery design that the maile has been added; draped around the body of our aircraft to honor our guests and give them a warm welcome aboard our flights.

As Hawai‘i’s flagship carrier, Lei Day is also deeply important to Hawaiian Airlines. Through our authentic Hawaiian hospitality, we strive to share aloha daily, which is the very essence of the holiday and why we’ve chosen Lei Day to reveal our refreshed logo, livery and visual identity.
