What type of data can I transfer from my old phone to my new Lumia Windows Phone 8?
You can transfer your contacts, calendar entries, to-dos, pictures, videos, text messages, DRM-free music, and office documents to your new phone. Some content, such as multimedia messages or DRM-protected music, you can back up on your computer. Some data you cannot transfer to your new phone.

These instructions may not apply to all phone models and manufacturers.

There are third-party computer apps available, such as Welcome Home to Windows Phone, that transfer data from your old phone to your new phone.

Contacts:

  • You can transfer your contacts from your old phone easily over Bluetooth or with a SD card using the Transfer my Data app on your new phone. If you don't have this app, you can download it from the Store.
  • If you have previously had a micro-SIM or micro-RUIM card, you can also copy your contacts from your card to your new phone.

Calendar:

  • If your contacts and calendar are stored online as part of an online service, such as Google Account or Microsoft Exchange, set up that account on your phone, and your contacts and calendar entries are imported automatically.
  • For more info, see the FAQ on how to transfer your contacts, calendar entries, and to-dos to your new phone.

Media files:

  • To transfer your media files, connect your phone to your computer with a compatible USB cable, and drag and drop the items you want to transfer. Depending on your old phone, you can also transfer pictures and DRM-free music over Bluetooth with the Transfer my Data app.
  • You can also use the Windows Phone app, which is a free app for PC and Apple Mac. To download and install the latest version on your PC, go to www.windowsphone.com. If you're using an Apple Mac, download the Windows Phone app from Mac App Store.
  • For more info, see the FAQs website on how to transfer your music, pictures, and videos to your new phone.

Office documents:

  • To use SkyDrive, you need a Microsoft (formerly Windows Live) account. If you don’t have a Microsoft (Windows Live) account, you can create one at www.signup.live.com or using your phone. For more info, see the user guide of your phone.

Other content on your old phone:

How can I sync my contacts and calendars from Outlook to my Lumia phone?
Option 1 - Microsoft Outlook for company/business mail account(s) (Microsoft Exchange Server):

On your phone, set up your mail account through Settings > email+accounts > add an account > Outlook.

The following settings are required. Usually these can be obtained from the system administrator for the Exchange server:

  • Mail address.
  • User name (usually the same as the login name for the business PC).
  • Password (usually the same as the password for the business PC).
  • The Microsoft Exchange server Domain.
  • The address for the Microsoft Exchange server.

Option 2 - Microsoft Outlook for private mail account(s):

On your phone, set up the mail account as a separate mail account through Settings > email+accounts > add an account > Microsoft account.

On your PC, the Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector needs to be installed to allow the primary Microsoft Account on the PC to synchronise with the same account on your phone after setting it up (if you are using Microsoft Office Outlook 2013, you can skip the parts about installing the Outlook Hotmail Connector since it natively supports Exchange ActiveSync option).

You need to have:

  • Microsoft Account (Windows Live) ID.
  • Microsoft Office Outlook on your computer.
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector downloaded and installed on your computer (Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010).
  • Microsoft Account set up on your phone.

To download and install Outlook Hotmail Connector, search for it at office.microsoft.com, and follow the displayed instructions. You may need to restart your computer, and install additional software.

More information on setting up a mail account can be found here.
