Diagnosing & Managing Groin Injury in Elite Sport

Dr Steve McNally (Head of Football Medicine & Science, Manchester United) and Professor Michael Callaghan (Head of Physical Therapies, Manchester United) are pleased to confirm that the inaugural Manchester United Sports Medicine Conference will take place on Friday 10th November 2017 at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Open to medical, scientific and healthcare professionals working across all sports along with students who have an interest in sports medicine and physiotherapy the conference will explore and discuss the difficulties of diagnosing and managing groin injury in elite sport.

With key speakers from multiple sport disciplines and topics covering clinical evaluation, imaging assessment and the rehabilitation process the inaugural Sports Medicine Conference is not to be missed.

GETTING HERE

FROM THE NORTH

Leave the M60 at Junction 12 M602 (Salford / Manchester). At the end of the M602 (Junction 3) follow signs for Salford Quays & Trafford Park. At the roundabout turn right onto Trafford Road (A5063). At the bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal, keep in the right hand lane, turn right and follow the road round to Trafford Wharf Road, then left at the traffic lights onto Waters Reach. Continue through the traffic lights onto Sir Matt Busby Way.

FROM THE SOUTH

Leave the M6 at Junction 19 and take the A556 in the direction of Manchester Airport. Continue onto the M56 to Manchester, passing the Airport, and follow the signs to the M60 (Leeds/Liverpool). Leave the M60 at Junction 7 (A56 Chester Road) and follow the signs for Manchester United onto Sir Matt Busby Way.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The Metrolink service operates a frequent service from the City Centre (including Victoria & Piccadilly Stations) to Old Trafford station which is situated within a five minute walk of the football ground. Metrolink enquiries Tel: 0161 205 2000

Professor Damian Griffin

Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Warwick

Professor Damian Griffin is the Foundation Chair of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Warwick. Damian’s clinical practice, which includes a national referral service based in Coventry and London, is the diagnosis and treatment of hip and groin pain in young adults, especially athletes. Joint-preserving surgery for early arthritis, hip arthroscopy, and the management of femoro-acetabular impingement syndrome are particular passions.

He built Warwick Orthopaedics academic department in the NHS, focusing research to measure the effectiveness of orthopaedic surgery. A major theme is surgery for sports injury, including the largest ever RCT of hip arthroscopy. www.hiparthroscopyclinic.co.uk

Dr Gian Bisciotti

FC Internazionale Milan and Co-author of the Italian Groin Consensus

Gian Nicola Bisciotti is Physiologist Lead at Aspetar orthopedic and sports medicine hospital. He graduated in Science and Technology of Sports Science and Physical Activity in Lyon where he was awarded a post-graduate qualification in Biology and Physiology of Exercise, and later was awarded a PhD in biomechanics at the Besançon University.

From 1999 to 2010 was professor at the Universities of Torino and Lyon. During this time he worked as a Physical Trainer for FC Internazionale Milan. In 2009 he left Inter Milan and became Lead Physiologist at the FIFA Centre of Excellence in Doha, Qatar.

Dr. Eanna Falvey

Head of Medical British & Irish Lions, Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin

Dr. Falvey graduated from University College Cork and completed a fellowship at the University of Melbourne.

He was appointed the Director of Sports Medicine at the Sports Surgery Clinic in 2008. He is heavily involved in the clinical research programme and in clinical practice.

He was the Irish Senior Rugby Team Doctor during the Rugby World Cups of 2011 and 2015. He was Team Doctor to the successful British & Irish Lions tours to Australia in 2013, and the recent drawn Test series with All Blacks in 2017.

He was the Irish Amateur Boxing Association Physician from 2009–2016.

Professor William C. Myers

Professor of Surgery, President of the Vincera Institute, Philadelphia

William C. Meyers has dedicated 30 years to pioneering the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of core muscle injuries. Dr Meyers takes care of many athletes in the USA and abroad with this set of injuries.

Dr. Meyers acquired much of his early experience with these injuries at Duke University, then helped create Drexel University College of Medicine, and served there as Senior Associate Dean and Chairman of Surgery for ten years.

In 2013. Dr Meyers has established the Vincera Institute, an integrated centre in Philadelphia dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, research and education of core injuries.

Dr Steve McNally

Head of Football Medicine and Science, Manchester United FC

Dr Steve McNally joined Manchester United in 2006 as Club Doctor. Since 2010 he has overseen Football Medicine & Science service provision throughout the Club. He was Medical Officer to England Youth Development Teams whilst also working in General Practice and Occupational Medicine. Dr. McNally has postgraduate qualifications in Sport & Exercise Medicine, Occupational Medicine, General Practice and Child Health with special interests in musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, football-relevant ‘performance imaging’ and tissue regenerative therapies.

Dr. McNally goal is to deliver innovative and pragmatic approaches to management of health problems and injury in the challenging environment of elite level football.

John Davin

Senior Physiotherapist, Manchester United FC

John Davin joined Manchester United in 1997 initially a part time role in the Academy. He was appointed full time in 1999 working with the U18 and Reserve teams. In 2010 John started working with the long term injured players from the First Team squad, specialising in manipulative therapy and advanced rehabilitation techniques.

John gained membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in 2002 and a was awarded Masters degree from University of Manchester in Manual Therapy in 2003. He also lectures in sports physiotherapy to both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Following an opening welcome the inaugural Sports Medicine Conference features inspiring, insightful presentations from industry leaders providing valuable insights and learnings within elite sport.

The Italian Groin Consensus

Dr. Bisciotti is a co-author of the first Italian consensus statement on Groin pain syndrome published in the BMJ OpenSEM last year. He will lecture on how the consensus informs clinicians on the terminology, clinical evaluation and imaging assessment in groin pain in the athlete.

The Warwick Agreement

An international consensus on femora-acetabular impingement syndrome”. Professor Griffin is the lead author of this important consensus published last year in the BJSM. He will present a summary of its important points and how they help the management of this condition.

Clinical Examination and Diagnosis of Groin Injury

Dr. Falvey will guide the audience through the key components of clinical examination of the groin and how this will help achieve the correct diagnosis.

Surgical Options for Groin Injury

Professor Meyers will give the delegates his experience and the evidence base of the various surgical options for groin injury, and when these options should be applied.

The Rehabilitation of Footballers after Groin Surgery

John Davin will explain his rationale behind the rehabilitation process and how this is applied in the football environment.

Imaging in Groin Injury

Dr. McNally will explain how imaging fits into the diagnostic triage of groin pain and his approach to groin-related presentations in a football club environment.
